On November 2, 2005, at the Time Summit, Dr. Maria C. Freire, President & CEO of the TB Alliance participated in a panel discussion entitled “How can Malaria and TB be contained?” Dr. Freire addressed global health leaders from around the world on the progress that is being made and the challenges that lie ahead in the effort to control tuberculosis (TB).
“We are running out of weapons,” said Dr. Freire. “It’s not only that we’re acquiring resistance, we are running out of the drugs to treat people with. I think this is a very serious problem.”

Ngilu, Minister of Health, Republic of Kenya; Dr. Steven C. Phillips, Medical Director, Global Issues and Projects Medicine and Occupational Health, Exxon Mobil Corporation. The panel was moderated by Philip Elmer DeWitt, Science Editor at Time Magazine.
