Overview:
Drive complex multi-functional and select intra-functional initiatives from conception through successful completion by overseeing the development of an actionable roadmap and ensuring effective execution against the plan for all aspects of the initiative. Lead and/or oversee others leading select alliances with pharmaceutical partners, multi-national consortia, and others to ensure relationships are optimized, goals are achieved, and obligations are mutually met.
Position Responsibilities:
- Oversee the development of a comprehensive set of plans, made up of discipline specific project plans, integrated into a program plan spanning all aspects of the initiative, including internal and external deliverables.
- Drive business decisions to align planning assumptions, applying knowledge of drug discovery, development, manufacturing, commercialization, and uptake to create plans that are both comprehensive and achievable.
- Deploy effective program management tactics to manage toward key dates and to proactively identify:
- Internal and external deliverables and critical paths
- Resource demands and manage associated planning
- Dependencies within discipline specific plans and across the larger programs
- Risk areas, and where warranted, proactively initiate contingency plans
- Provide leadership throughout the execution of the programs, and establish business processes to:
- Monitor progress and ensure issues are identified and resolved
- Escalate issues to resolution removing barriers or hurdles
- Prioritize needed actions and secure timely decisions
- Proactively communicate timeline slippage and identify mitigation action
- Through Joint Steering Committees or other mechanisms, lead or oversee Alliance Management for multi-function contractual pharmaceutical relationships spanning development, manufacturing, and commercialization (e.g., Pretomanid/BPaL pharmaceutical partners Viatris, J&J, Macleods, Hongqi, and Lupin). Serve as Program and/or Alliance Manager for identified collaborations, including the Gates Medical Research Institute (GMRI), IMI/IHI, and Pan-TB.
- Direct Project Management support for identified clinical programs, establishing consistent practices for project plans including timelines and budgets (e.g., Q203, LAI, 876 and 587). Oversee and mentor both internally appointed and external project managers (e.g., RTI), resulting in increased integration within the teams, consistent reporting for comparison across programs, development of scenarios and cross-product views to support team and management discussions.
- Infuse project and program management skills into the organization; mentoring others, sharing business processes and best practices, creating and maintaining relevant tools.
- Together with other Departmental leaders, identify those projects and alliances which would be most efficiently managed with distinct and dedicated Project and Alliance Management oversight.
- Effectively manage and lead seasoned Program and Alliance Management staff.
Ideal candidates will have:
- 20+ years of pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry experience, with deep working knowledge of the industry disciplines spanning the full continuum of activities, including drug discovery, pre-clinical and clinical development, regulatory approvals and product registration, manufacturing and commercialization, and product introduction.
- Substantial program and project management experience leading comprehensive initiatives, with internal and external deliverables. Experience in a highly leveraged operating model required.
- Previous experience as a designated asset or portfolio lead, accountable for all of the strategic management of an asset, including defining the range of development options and key metrics for delivery of goals.
- Working knowledge of project management methodology and tools.
- Previous alliance management experience required, ideally with large scale relationships spanning development, manufacturing, and commercialization.
- Previous global health experience preferred with working knowledge of developing country regulatory and access challenges.
- Strong leadership and communication skills; ability to drive decisions through influence and strong interpersonal relationships and work effectively across all areas of the organization as well as externally.
- PhD or MD in relevant scientific discipline, with progressive pharmaceutical or biotech industry experience.
Location:
Position located in New York, NY with hybrid, flexible work schedule. Other locations may be considered. Domestic and international travel required.
Salary and Benefits:

Starting salary is expected to be in the range of US$330,000 – $440,000 exact salary will be commensurate with skills and experience and adjusted to reflect local currency for candidates outside the US.
